Concerns with drinking alcohol in cold weather

WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) - The cold temperatures are taking a toll on everyone's body, but doctors warn the effects become more severe when consuming alcohol.

In the cases of severely low temperatures your body works to keep your core warm.

When you consume alcohol it counteracts that by bringing blood to the skin giving us that warm feeling.

This could make for a deadly combination because it causes your body to release more heat, and make it so you may not feel the effects of frost bite.

Ohio Valley Medical Center, Dr. Rick Greco said, "In this kind of cold weather, close to zero degrees, it only takes 15 minutes or so for the skin to start reacting to the severity of the temperature, and the alcohol just makes that worse."

Dr. Greco suggests if you are planning to drink this weekend to do it inside or just make sure your entire body is covered.

He also said if you or somebody is feeling the effects of frostbite to take precautions necessary to warm them up, and if it continues seek medical attention.
