(WTRF) - An article circling social media claims that this year's flu shot is more harmful than helpful.
But health professionals and the CDC want you to know any article claiming the flu shot is causing flu-related deaths are just plain false.
A story by YourNewsWire has been making the rounds on social media, and claims that this year's flu shot is responsible for multiple deaths.
But medical professionals say this is fake news.
Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department Administrator Howard Gamble says the flu shot is not dangerous, and that this article most likely is twisting factual information to match a certain narrative.
Gamble says there are many misconceptions that the flu shot causes the flu, but that is not true either.
The flu shot contains a dead virus.
You may experience some symptoms after getting the shot, but Gamble says if you get the flu, you probably picked it up before the immunization set in.
He says there is also no way to prove the shot caused a death.
"To be able to say there is a death due to the vaccination is very highly unlikely. You'd have to do the studies that say when did that individual get vaccinated with what type of vaccine. There are multiple makers of flu vaccine. Including multiple vaccinations, there are multiple makers. And then to say we're linking that to a specific vaccination and to a death," said Gamble.
Health professionals actually encourage that you do get a flu shot, especially as different strands of the flu swirl around.
It's not too late to get your shot from your doctor or pharmacy.
