New Continuous Care Center coming to Wheeling

It's a project Wheeling Hospital has been working on since Fall of 2016.

WHEELING, W.Va. - It's one of the top questions asked by people driving on I-70 into Wheeling: what's the new building by Wheeling Hospital?

It's a project Wheeling Hospital has been working on since Fall of 2016. Now, it's starting to come together.

"What we were able to do with Tower 5 we could do with the Continuous Care Center," said Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston Monsignor Kevin Quirk.

The new 107,000 square-foot facility overlooks the hospital, and is set to replace the two-story Continuous Care Center they use now. The building is 2.5 times bigger with 144 private rooms, instead of 120 beds that they have now.

"Visitors don't want to go there," Wheeling Hospital C.E.O. Ron Violi. "Hell, we've got doctors who don't want to visit nursing homes who say, 'no, you can be my patient for 15 years but if they put you in a nursing home you'll have to get another doc, I don't go there to see patients.' They're not pleasant places, what we're putting out there is someplace that's going to be place."

Along with the private rooms the new center will have a state of the art kitchen, workout facilities, a spa, a hair salon, among other things. Violi says the old center worked for it's time but today it's unacceptable and a change needed to be made, "You got to move forward. We didn't leave the hospital the way it was, we changed it."

Christine Tarr, the administrator for the Continuous Care Center, began her career as a nursing assistant 30 years ago. She says helping people who could be in the final parts of their lives is an incredible experience, and this new facility will make it even better.

"We would like for that to be the most precious time with your family as you make that journey," said Tarr.

The new center is expected to open, and see patients in early spring of this year.
