Oak Glen Middle and High School placed on temporary lockdown

HANCOCK COUNTY - According to Hancock County officials, Oak Glen Middle School and High School were placed on temporary lockdown Thursday morning after receiving reports of a possible handgun in the area of a school bus.

Officials say the caller said that they saw what they believed to be a school aged child with what appeared to be a handgun walking in the area of a school bus stop.

Once the call was dispatched, Hancock County Sheriff Deputies, school Resource Officers, WV State Police, and Officer Emergency Management all responded to Oak Glen Middle and High School.

When the call came in, there were two busses and two stops in the area of where the call came in, each carrying middle and high school aged students.

Interviews and searches of the students on the busses were conducted, and both schools were put on a precautionary lockdown until law enforcement officials were able to determine that the students and faculty were safe.

After a complete and thorough search, no evidence of a firearm was found at either school.

"When a call like this comes in, you have to take all precautions because you don’t know what you could be walking into. Our officers and the other agencies involved handled this situation in a timely manner and made sure that everyone was safe," said Sheriff Fletcher.

“I understand that there were a lot of things being said on social media and unfortunately things can get misconstrued. There was not a shooting at either school; no shots were fired by anyone involved. There was no evidence of a firearm found and that’s the best news we can receive, everyone is safe," Fletcher said.

The temporary lockdown was lifted once the areas were secured. Students and faculty were then able to go back to their normal activities.
