Bailey’s nomination to the federal court is a good choice, but he will have a very tough act to follow in Stamp.
President Bush announced on Wednesday that Wheeling attorney John Bailey has been appointed to fill a vacancy on the federal court for northern West Virginia.
Bailey has been practicing law in our area for the past 30 years. He is a partner in one of the oldest and finest law firms in the state. It’s an excellent choice and we all congratulate Bailey on this well-deserved honor.
But that good feeling is tinged with some sadness because Bailey’s ascendance to the federal bench means that Judge Fred Stamp is retiring.
In sixteen years as judge, Stamp has been the model of civility, decency, good judgment and respect for the law.
From the House of Delegates to local charities to some of the most difficult federal cases of his generation, Stamp has always been willing to serve his state, his neighbors and his nation. And his example has encouraged others to do the same.
Thank you, Judge Stamp.
