It happens to a woman in the United States every 4 seconds... meaning 15 per minute...and 900 in one hour. Domestic violence, whether emotional or physical is a vicious cycle but a cycle that is survivable. Hear the story of now turned author Becky Conrad.
Becky Conrad knew she had to get out of her relationship before she would end up dead. At the age of 25, the man she thought was a prince...was really a wolf in sheeps clothing.
Becky tells 7News' Leigh Ann Towne, "we had 2 stairs..i went to the bottom of the stairs where he was yelling from the top and he was standing at the top of the stairs pointing a shotgun at me."
Becky left at the age of 31. The love of her pets kept her going. After all of the struggles, she says the light became brighter and she met her present husband of 25 years.
At the age of 55, Becky had another life changing event. She enrolled in college at Stark State in Ohio, to be a medical transcriptionist. Becky had to write a thesis, and chose domestic violence. Little did she know, but she also chose a new career path...an author. Her instructor encouraged her to write a book on her own abuse.
Becky's first book, 'The Door Facade', was released on December 31, 2003. She graduated a few months before that with her medical transcriptionist certificate.
Becky just recently finished another book entitled, 'A Better Day Dawning', dedicated to abuse survivors.
