POWHATAN -- Major concerns are spreading about staph infections.
At least two Connecticut high school students have been diagnosed with a potentially deadly infection. Crews have been cleaning a high school locker room and gym in Richmond, Ind., after a student developed an infection.
Officials are treating it as if it's the strain that was blamed for the death of a Virginia high school senior.
Officials confirm there are two individuals with staph infections at Powhatan Elementary School. One is a teacher and one is a student.
Both are out sick, and are reportedly under a doctor's care.
And one case was reported at River High School. This is a teacher, who is also off work and being treated.
7News was told both schools are taking precautions and cleaning all surfaces with bleach and other disinfectants, and school is still in session.
Health Department Administrator Rusty Vermillion said any decision to close the schools would rest with the school system, the health department does not have that authority.
He said the health department is sending out the latest information to all coaches, athletic directors, administrators and school nurses.
At this point, he says the schools are taking all the necessary precautions.
