A rapidly spreading health disaster has brought federal disease detectives to Appalachia. Investigators who normally track outbreaks like meningitis or west nile virus have for the first time turned their attention to a silent, and stealthy killer. If you want to get a handle on west virginia's health crisis... get up early because it starts with breakfast. What worries John Law-- and the state's other top health officials-- is that traditional favorites have created an obesity epidemic. They call it a disease outbreak and a health crisis. When you have 28% of the people in West Virginia with hypertension, you have the state ranking number 3 in the nation in obesity, it is a serious problem. State officials sought out the nation's top disease detectives to come to places like the town of Clarksburg to help figure out why so many West Virginians are putting on so much weight. Investigators went looking for answers in places where West Virginians admit... they get too much of everything. In random surveys... investigators asked: how often do you eat fast food? Would you replace regular dairy products with low-fat? Do you exercise and how often? The results may prove what health experts suspect: -despite the state's open spaces-- most would rather drive than walk. -and that poverty encourages many to indulge in cheaper, starchy foods that aren't good for them.
