ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio -- Millions of disabled Americans are being denied social security disability benefit even though they are truly disabled, according to Congressman Charlie Wilson.
On Thursday morning, Wilson held a news conference in his district office in Bridgeport to discuss what he calls "the deplorable wait" for disability benefits.
They say the individual stories are heart-wrenching.
A special report by CBS News showed that millions of disabled people are being denied the social security benefits they've paid for.
Locally, one former union plumber was nearly blind, but had to wait more than two years for his disability payments. By the time he got his first check, his house was being foreclosed on.
Wilson recently sent a letter to the commissioner of Social Security.
He demanded a prompt response for the allegations in the CBS report.
And he asked what the SSA is doing to ensure better consideration of people's claims.
