WHEELING -- Political signs in West Virginia are peppering street corners and other places, but now an un-named candidate for State Senate is being accused of taking one of his opponent’s signs in Ohio County.
Special Prosecutor Scott Smith asked to be removed from this case, which could involve petit larceny and destruction of property charges.
Smith said it's due to the fact that he is "well acquainted" with both candidates.
West Virginia State Senate Democratic Candidate, Shane Mallet, confirmed that a criminal report had been filed regarding someone stealing his campaign signs.
According to the Wheeling Police Department, three recent petit theft reports have involved political signs.
The news release stated one of those included the arrest of Wheeling Island resident Justin Mann. It went on to say, police said they witnessed him taking a political sign.
