BETHESDA, Ohio -- The Herbert P. Thorpe Memorial Playground in Bethesda, Ohio has entertained generations of kids since 1951.
But safety standards have changed and almost every feature at the park has gone the way of the dinosaur.
The last straw was an inspection by their insurance company's risk assessment expert, according to Village Administrator Tim Zdanski.
“He indicated that he's been into a couple injury settlement actions that have occurred across Ohio, and the playground equipment might've been a little bit better than ours.” Zdanski said.
New standards state that a slide can only face northeast, otherwise, it becomes solar-heated and a burning hazard.
Even the ground beneath is too hard. It must now be cushioned with eight inches of rubber mulch for "fall protection."
The village has applied for a grant to rebuild the playground with new modern equipment, which is expected to cost around $58,000. Sources say $2,000 has been collected and the old equipment will get money by the way of scrap metal.
If you would like to help, you can donate at the Wesbanco branch in Bethesda under "Playground Fund", Bethesda, Ohio 43719.
