Gives OK to More Widespread Use
Story by Jerry Echemann
CHARLESTON -- The Governor's Office wants to know what "medical transport drive time" means.
Outside of that, Joe Manchin has approved language by the Health Care Authority to allow more hospitals to perform heart catheterization procedures, including angioplasty.
Spokeswoman Lara Ramsburg says the Governor needs to know when the clock starts ticking on one-hour-drive-time.
Ramsburg says it's important to smaller hospital which are approximately one hour from larger facilities that currently perform angioplasty.
Spokesman Gregg Warren is calling the outcome a "modest win." Warren believes competing medical centers within an hour drive, would be restricted to emergency angioplasty. Warren said "elective" procedures compose the majority. Weirton Medical Center CEO Joe Endrich said Manchin made the "right decision." Weirton Medical Center has been one of three "demonstration hospitals" performing angioplasty.
Endrich says nearly 900 have been done over the past five years with a complication rate of 2.3%. He says the average if 5%.
