Chelsea Kanatus died earlier this month.
MORGANTOWN -- On Tuesday, officials confirmed that the West Virginia University student who died earlier this month, did have bacterial meningitis.
Chelsea Kanatus, 19 of Virginia, died March 2 at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
John Guilfoose, MD, an infectious disease specialist at WVU, says tests have confirmed that Kanatus did indeed have bacterial meningitis.
Doctors tested her spinal fluid.
Her family was informed Tuesday morning.
No other cases have been reported.
Forty people who may have come into contact with Kanatus were given antibiotics as a precaution.
Meningitis can be spread through intimate or casual contact.
WVU hosted a public forum on March 5 to educate the community on the illness.
