Mountaineer Football Alumni Pat McAfee Tries Wrestling

South Charleston -- “He could have killed me,” exclaimed record breaking ex-West Virginia University Kicker Pat McAfee after making his IWA East Coast Wrestling debut Sunday. McAfee, who is a lifelong wrestling fan, attended the South Charleston show to sign autographs.

After being called into the ring he found himself in an impromptu bout with IWA wrestler the War Pig. In a dramatic bout, the War Pig went after McAfee’s legs, but the kicker turned the tables on the wrestler with a kick to the head. After the kick, Pat wrapped up the match to win the unscheduled and unsanctioned bout with a three count.

McAfee was ecstatic about the win. He says it was something he has looked forward to his entire life. “It was like the first time I ever kicked before, cause it’s not something I’m used to, so I was real excited." He added "I couldn’t be with a greater group of people here to do it, it was an awesome experience.”

McAfee is not planning to hang up his kicking shoes for wrestling boots any time soon. He still hopes to hear his name called in next month's NFL draft. Asked if he was ready to trade the gridiron flory for the squared circle, he replied “I’ve always said if this whole football thing doesn’t work out I’d love to. I think the guys at IWA would definitely help me out cause they are such good people and helped by training me.”

The future looks bright for the former Mountaineer. He's now an undefeated pro wrestler, and several draft preview sites predict an NFL team will call his name next month in the draft.
