West Virginia State Police Trooper talks with 7News about driving drunk.

By Steven Centofanti

WHEELING -- A Los Angeles Angels pitcher was killed in a crash early Thursday morning and now the driver being charged for the accident is suspected of drunk driving.

This is a major problem across the United states. According to the Center for Disease Control, about 36 people everyday die in car car crashes that involve an alcohol impaired driver.

Pitcher Nick Adenhart was a passenger in a car when a van broadsided it after barreling through an intersection.

Police say the driver, who is being charged for causing the crash, had a suspended lisence because of previous drunk driving convictions.

Almost two years ago, a 12 year-old Tyler County boy was killed in a drunk driving accident. Sawyer Evans along with is dad Courtney, were killed on Interstate 68 in July of 2007.

West Virginia Sgt. Scott Adams, said it's not worth it to drink and drive.

Brian stone was later found guilty of being intoxicated behind the wheel and causing the crash that killed five people including the Evan's.

Bill, your welcome to state whatever interpetation of the way Courts have ruled in anyway you choose. It doesn't change the fact that the law of the land (The US Supreme Court )ruled otherwise in regard to this violence issue. You then expand on the myth by injecting the thought that these people are conscious Highway Terrorists? Strong words considering I fail to believe that people wake up in the morning (with intent) and go "gee, I think I'll get drunk today and see if my airbag works as well as they say it will... I hope my test victim has one as well".

As stated below, these deaths when they occur always seem to involve BAC levels ranging from .18 upwards of the high .20's if not .30's on occassion.. In other words, drunk beyond comprehension and certainly have no business even being near a motor vehicle. These people that lose it driving down interstate's the wrong way or losing control wiping out innocents on sidewalks are hardly what one could say are .08 drivers..All .08 has done is create a booming business in the realm of arrests. Arrests which are used as a tool to inflate numbers to say "see" look at all the "drunks " we have out there. Anyone can be arrested these days. And the numbers of 0.00 arrests are going up at an alarming rate. People losing their jobs, homes, livelyhoods over an Officer's "I think" statement. And when final judgement comes down in a not guilty verdict, their lives and finances have already been damaged with no recourse for many of these people, many who land up with bankrupcy proceedings along with being forced to seek public money just for survival purposes.

It time for a database that records actual BAC's for those involved in these deadly crashes. Its time to pinpoint where the real BAC problem is. There are millions of drivers out there that may consume a beer or two after work and drive home safely. If we were to believe that .08 is the definition of totally incapacitated, the number of deaths on the highways ought to be in the thousands if not ten's thousands. So where are those deaths? Where are the records on these numbers? I'll tell you where they are. They are in an archive not being researched or evaluated properly as to do so, would show the truth of the matter. Its the people slamming 10 /12 drinks in a couple hours of time that are doing the damage. Not the social drinker who has 2 maybe three drinks with dinner and low and behold find themselves being accused of being some drunk manic or "terrorist" as you so eliquiently put it.

"Homicide by D.W.I. is Americas only Crime of Violence that is a socially accepted crime."

Sorry Bill, it's vehicular manslaughter, NOT homicide. And the supreme court has already ruled that DUI is not a crime of violence.

And didn't I read somewhere that this person had a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit? Yet another example showing that when it comes to spectacular DUI fatalities, it's almost always someone with a very high BAC level.

Gee, I could have sworn that when MADD insisted on passing .08 that they claimed it would stop these kinds of fatalities. Hasn't worked at all. All .08 has done is criminalize 100's of thousands of people who previously would have been considered innocent.

But I bet Bill would now suggest that interlocks are going to stop all drunk driving. Afterall, if this guy had an interlock on his car, he wouldn't have thought of borrowing or buying another vehicle, now would he?

"When are people going to learn not to Drink and Drive????" Drinking and driving is not illegal. DRUNK driving is.

"Homicide by D.W.I. is Americas only Crime of Violence that is a socially accepted crime."

Neither DUI NOR homicide are or will ever be socially acceptable. And if you look at the spewing of hatred on these blogs for the driver in this tragedy, you would certainly never think either were accepted. You(professional victim that you are) and MADD, et al (though I can't say I've ever heard RID pull this number out of their a**)have to get your story straight; because MADD insists that a driver who is arrested for DUI has driven 87 times before being arrested. There are 1.6 million DUI arrests annually in this country. If violence occurred every time someone drove drunk, as you try to suggest, the number of fatalities in this country would be 7 or 8 times greater than the Holocaust. And that would be every year! This doesn't happen. The fact that the Fed has set an artificially low threshhold for DUI, THAT is why there are so many arrests--NOT because of the "violence".

When are people going to learn not to Drink and Drive????. They must use other means of transportation when they imbibe, or have a designated driver. As we get closer to Prom time I will visit Schools and talk about under age drinking and driving. In our county we have over 500+ drunk drivers at the Victim Impact panels and recently we had 15 men and 1 woman with more than one conviction for this Crime. The time is Now for more severe punishment to be given. These "HIGHWAY TERRORISTS" should know better, then when there are fatals involved they mutter "I'm Sorry at their sentencing which is meaningless at that point. Don'T say they made a mistake,D.W.I. is not nor will ever be a MISTAKE, Don'T blame Alcoholism as the cause Why?, because there ids nothing in the Disease (Addiction) of Alcoholism that forces one to drive after achieving that state. Homicide by D.W.I. is Americas only Crime of Violence that is a socially accepted crime.Supreme Court Members Please take notice of the statement. Bill Dikant, Victim Advocate, Castleton, N.Y. 12033
