CAMBRIDGE, OHIO -- A two-vehicle accident in Guernsey County kills a Missouri man.

According to the Ohio Highway Patrol, a car driven by 90-year-old A. John Law of Lore City was traveling eastbound on Interstate 70 just east of Interstate 77 Thursday.

Officials said Law attempted to make a U-turn from the right lane, and collided with a motorcycle driven by 48-year-old Paul Veltrop of Fenton, Missouri that was traveling in the left lane.

Veltrop and his passenger, Suzanne Veltrop, were ejected from the motorcycle.

Paul Veltrop was pronounced dead at the scene by the Guernsey County Coroner.

Suzanne Veltop is currently being treated at Columbus hospital.

Law and his passenger, 82-year-old Clara Law, suffered minor injuries.

The crash is currently under investigation.

I agree with the idea of elderly people having to be tested for a license from the age of 65. Have seen many elderly people who shouldn't be driving and their families don't stop them. We stopped my dad and he didn't like it but it was for the safety of others and him. I would have felt terrible if he had hurt someone. Unfortunelty this accident could have happened with a younger drive behind the wheel too. People today are in just too big of a hurry and do unsafe driving just to get there a few seconds sooner. I have had people pass me in no passing zones and end up at the same place that I went just a few seconds sooner than me. SERIOUSLY! WHAT IS THE POINT OF THAT! I would rather get there a few minutes later and safe. People have no patience or consideration for anyone these days and they don't seem to care who else they may be endangering with their wreckless behavior.

I agree with Scott and Sharon in that "the fact that the driver was 90 years old isn't as relavent as the fact that he felt it was OK to perform an ILLEGAL U-TURN in the middle of an Interstate." He should be punished - 90 years old or not. He could have just as easily made the decision NOT to make the U-turn.

I see old people shuffling along, who cannot lift their feet to walk, and they get into a car and drive away. They drive with one foot on the brake and one foot on the gas pedal. That's why they drive through walls of buildings and over embankments (it's called "peeling out".) They should have to take a driver's exam every 5 years after age 70.

Raymond Moncer is an immature idiot. This is illustrated not only by his ridiculous comments but also by his childish posting in all caps. I'm sure Paul was wearing his helmut. My deepest condolences to the Veltrops and all of their friends. You are all in my prayers. Dave Malone Formerly of USF Holland Toledo. AKA Snorkasaurus. God has his secret things........

All airplane pilots (and I assume most truckers too) have to pass a physical to keep flying (and driving), I think it is way past time to institute mandatory drivers exams for the elderly. I'm sure when I get that old I won't want to submit to one either but just imagine how many less accidents there would be. I am a biker and ALWAYS wear my helmet - even though PA has changed the law - and I am constantly on guard for people (not just the elderly) that aren't paying attention, cell phone yaking, texting, eating, BS'ing, you name it. Besides, wearing a helmet only helps in crashes at less than 30 MPH anyway, any more than that and you are pretty much wasted anyway. If you want to take the extra risk, it's your decision, not someone who probably doesn't even ride anyway.

i'm so sorry leslie - pay no attention to those who do not understand. your dad was awesome - and safe- and loving - and he would have cared deeply for anyone else who might have been in a similar accident. we knew him and we can't replace him - and this man will have to live with this horrible mistake. that can argue about bikes all they want - it was your dad, our friend, that mattered and your absolutely right - there's nothing funny about it. love you.

I think that after you reach a certain age you should be retested as if you were getting you license for the first time.... Test all aspects of there driving... I have been at the BMV and seen a man in his 80's or 90's doing the eye test and couldn't read a thing ad PASSED!!!!! This is just outrageous!!!!!! If you test them better then thing like this can be avoided..... I drive a tractor trailer for a living and I see some people that just don't need to behind a wheel of a car.... I have seen some come so close to driving under my trailer cause the didn't look!!!!

There was just an accident a couple weeks ago near Malaga, Oh involving an 80 yr old man and a motorcycle. The motorcyclist died. And again near Beallsville, Oh with an elderly woman and a vehicle. The elderly woman died. How do these 90 yr old people keep getting a drivers license? Why don't they have to pass a health exam? I feel so sorry for the family who lost their loved one.

My condolances to this mans family. This is so awful and it is unreal how inconsiderate people are of motorcycles, regardless of the stupid helmet/seatbelt laws. This is a tragic mishap that should not have happened.

Paul and Suzanne were dear friends and fellow bike riders. I know for a fact that they both wore helmets all the time. Paul was a professional truck driver well aware of the dangers of the road so I'm sure he was far more careful than most on a bike or in a car. He loved his wife and daughter very much and would never have done anything to put either one at risk. The fact that the driver was 90 years old isn't as relavent as the fact that he felt it was OK to perform an ILLEGAL U-TURN in the middle of an Interstate from the RIGHT lane, crossing another lane of traffic to do so. This just shows he obviously wasn't paying attention to his surroundings. Another fact is that the pipes, or exhaust, Paul had on his bike was loud enough to be heard if he was close enought to this car that killed him. I pray Suzanne will be alright and that she will somehow be able to forgive this 90 year old gentleman that wasn't even taken to a hospital for the senceless death of her husband!

The man that died in this article was my father. My dad was a professional over-the-road truck driver for 27 years, which is as long as I have been alive. He was a a very responsible motorcyclist and he and my step-mother always wore their helmets. I have been riding with him for years and have NEVER felt as though I was in danger. The more articles I read the more it hurts me to know that my father is going to miss out on most of his only child's life and the fact that I no longer have my father, my role-model, my hero, and my best friend in my life because some 90 year old man couldn't wait 5 seconds to make an illegal U-turn into the best thing I had in my life. LOL? There is nothing funny about this article!!! My Father died because of it.

I have read the comments on the new atricles here for many years and never felt i needed to chime in but the stupidity in this thread has finally changed it for the following reasons: 1. No wear does it mention helmets. So why do people assume there were no helmets on and start an issue about the helmet laws. Let the people that ride decide the amount of risk they want to endure related to helmet wearing. And before you ask yes i do wear one. 2. the driver of the car is said to be at fault. and yes at 90 prob should not be driving but u need to know the mans condition before deciding this. Teenagers have the largest percentage of wreck for any age group. Should they not be allowed to drive. Common that argument is dumb. 3. Majority of the close calls I have had have been the fault of drivers not paying atttention to the bikes on the road. Most of these drivers have been middle aged. Of course that may be that most the geesers drive to slow lol.

How do you know that he didn't have a helmet on? Also, if we outlaw motorcycles are you also saying we should outlaw small economy cars because of their size against semi's? Think about it!!!!!!! That is rediculous.

I THINK THEY SHOULD OUT LAW MOTOR CYCLES ON THE ROAD...OR MAKE A LANE ONLY FOR THEM...PLUS NEED HELMET LAW IN OHIO...YOU HAVE TO WEAR SEAT BELTS IN A CAR. ALSO NEED TO TAKE LICENSE FROM YOU WHEN YOU REACH 75..........TO DRIVE A CAR ..IN SOME CASES EARLIER..
