MORGANTOWN -- ATV riding all too often turns into tragedy in West Virginia.
Just this weekend in McDowell County, a 12-year-old died when her ATV plunged over a 200-foot embankment.
On Monday campers at the 4-H camp in Monongalia County learned about ATV safety to prevent accidents like that.
Representatives from Morgantown Honda Yamaha Suzuki KTM answered questions and went over common riding rules.
The lesson was part of the camp's Safety Day activities.
"There are so many accidents it's really unfortunate how many accidents there are," said Becca Flint-Clark, the camp's WVU Extension Agent. "so that is something we thought these kids should know. Many of the kids come from the farm and from other areas where they do have access to ATV's and it's something we really wanted them to learn because it can be devastating."
The campers also learned about basic first aid.
Organizers say the 4-H camp is about teaching children important life skills while also having fun.
Day camp spots are still available in August.
