Claim Span Can be Restored

By Jerry Echemann

BELLAIRE, OH -- A web-based group called historicbridges.org was not only in Bellaire Sunday, they have recently been walking the deck of the toll bridge, they say with permission of the owner.

"It's a very important historic structure," according to Nathan Holth of the web group. "We'd like to see it available for future generations to enjoy, and we'd like to see it become a functional crossing for this area."

A former Michigan Department of Highways Construction Inspector is with the group. Luke Gordon claims it can be restored for traffic. Gordon said the privately held bridge was better maintained than many state structures, and probably had less traffic. Gordon said it was never salted in winter.

Both men agree that the Ohio Department of Transportation holds the key to any reopening. They designed plans for an approach many years ago, and would have to give permission for it to be built.

The Bellaire Toll Bridge was constructed in 1926 and was last used in 1991.

With all due respect to Donna, the only thing this bridge and the Silver Bridge have in common is color. The Silver Bridge was an eye-bar suspension bridge with rocker towers. This is a cantilever bridge.

They'd have to do a LOT of restoring for me to ever use that bridge. I lived in Gallipolis when the Silver Bridge fell.
