Nearly 30 years ago, Mike Hamrick suited up for the Thundering Herd football team.
On Monday, he returned to Huntington to take the helm of all things Marshall athletics.
The West Virginia-native was named the new Marshall University Athletic Director this afternoon inside the Cam Henderson Center.
Hamrick graduated from MU in 1980 after a two-year stint as linebacker for the football team.
A year later he received his Master's Degree from Ohio University.
For the past six years he served as Athletic Director for UNLV.
He took over a program that had been mired under NCAA sanctions.
Under his watch, the Rebels enjoyed tremendous success: 22 Mountain West Conference Championships, including five each in 2006-07 and 2007-08, and a school-record six MWC titles in 2004-05.
During Monday's press conference, Hamrick stressed that he wanted to continue that winning tradition at Marshall, but by doing things "the right way."
"We're not going to break any rules," Hamrick said in front of a crowded Hartley Room at the Cam Henderson Center. "Everybody wants to win, our coaches want to win, but we will do things the right way."
Hamrick replaces Bob Marcum, who resigned from his post on June 30th.
