CADIZ, Ohio -- Officials met in Cadiz, Ohio, Monday night to discuss turning the former Consolidation Coal Company Corporation Preparation Plant Site, south of Cadiz, into one that would help with the current waste water collection system.
According to a release at the meeting, the current system is more than 70 years old and it allows storm water and snow melt to enter sewer lines, which overloads the treatment plant. As a result, it's causing substandard treatment and violation of village EPA discharge permits.
The idea listed, is to divert about two-thirds of the Cadiz waste water flow to a new aerobic treatment plant. They would utilize the treated waste water to grow algae in a series of environmentally controlled ponds which will be processed to extract a type of oil which has many of the characteristics of diesel fuel.
Supporting this project are U.S. Rep. Zack Space, D-Ohio, U.S. Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, and U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, along with Ohio state Sen. Jason Wilson.
The overall project would cost $6 million.
