WHEELING, WV -- Brightly painted Victorian storefronts, each offering a different type of merchandise.
Clothing, toys, hats, purses, antiques, jewelry and books.
And the prices?
A blouse that would ordinarily cost $40 would cost about $4.
This is the vision of one Wheeling businessman, who feels the Friendly City's empty buildings would be a perfect place for a consignment center.
"Now you'd have shopping, the city would be beautiful, the kids would have something to do and it would get the town moving, where you might attract a dollar store or a boutique to come into downtown and that would get the whole business community going," said James Grace, owner of the Tiki Bar and Grill. "There's no big vision about looking for a multi-million dollar developer to come to downtown Wheeling, because chances are that's not going to happen. Unfortunately, we passed on the mall 30 to 40 years ago."
Grace says the old G.C. Murphy building could be transformed into an activity center for youngsters.
He said Wheeling has a wonderful waterfront, and now it needs a thriving downtown to support and complement that.
He said especially in these hard economic times, the public would embrace consignment stores, where they could sell their unused items, and buy others at low prices.
