In just a short amount of time, Jefferson County fire crews were put up against fighting separate blazes Monday night.

At just after 6:30 p.m. Monday, Steubenville Fire Department was called to a home at 304 S. Fifth St.

A fire official said that the home had not been recently occupied, but utilities were still connected.

The blaze was able to be contained to one second floor bedroom.

Then after 7 p.m., seven fire departments were called to a house at 114 First Ave. in Yorkville.

Neighbors said flames shot into the sky in Jefferson County as crews were forced to call in the tanker task force to assist in putting out the fire.

The roof of the house collapsed and crews worked for more than three hours to keep the fire from spreading to the two homes next door.

Yorkville fire Chief Kevin Klubert said the fire began around 7 p.m. Monday night on the second floor of the house.

"The house is abandoned and somebody tried to start this fire ... this time they were successful," said Klubert.

Neighbor John Hilliard said he is concerned and believes the city needs to address the problem.

"I am going to go to the next city council meeting and see if something can be done. With the way I work I can't risk going to work and risk everything I got," said Hilliard
