The black lab, Radar, brings new hope to Scott Ullom.

WHEELING --  For several years, seeing eye dogs have allowed those without sight to explore new worlds.

But you're about to meet a black lab that does the same thing for his master that is hearing impaired. Radar lives up to his name by alerting Scott Ullom of the dangers around him.

Back in 1991, Scott Ullom worked as a master rescue diver for the Miami-Dade Police Department. It was during a daring rescue that Scott lost almost all of his hearing.

"I am now deaf, completely, in my right ear and I wear a cochlear implant," Ullom said. "I have about 10 percent hearing in my left ear."

Because of his impairment, Scott was teamed up with a hearing assistance dog named Radar.

After 18 months of training, Radar now responds to more than 105 commands.

"He was trained by the women at the U.S. Penitentiary in Bruceton Mills. He is part of the sight-dog program and his is a black lab."

Just like a seeing eye dog, Radar makes Ullom aware of the things around him that affect him through sound.

But Radar also does other amazing tasks.

"He can open and close doors and turn lights on and off. He can load and unload a front loading washer and dryer," Ullom said. "He can get stuff out of the refrigerator. That's probably the neatest thing because you can look at him and ask him to get you a bottle of water and he will."
