MOUNDSVILLE -- A Marshall County Sheriff’s Deputy is recovering after a pistol blew up on Tuesday during qualifications, according to Chief Deputy Kevin Cecil.

The veteran officer was using a Glock 21 .45 caliber pistol with out of country ammunition at a shooting range outside of Moundsville, Cecil said.

It’s believed the ammunition was bad, causing the receiver to blow apart in the sergeant’s hand.

He was immediately taken to Reynold’s Memorial in Glendale. He was treated and released but is undergoing further testing due to some complications, Cecil said.

The shooting range was immediately shut down and the ammunition was pulled out of use.

The guns have only been at the department for two weeks. All of the other officers have qualified, some of them even using the same ammunition as the injured deputy.

An investigation is under way.

"out of country ammunition" says it all. Most other countries that produce ammunition do not follow the same standards set forth by SAAMI for the pressure generated by those fired cartridges. The .45 ACP is a low pressure round at 21,000 PSI compared to the 9mm or .40SW at 35,000 PSI (one wouldn't think so giving the size of the .45 casing). Glocks are designed to handle the pressure generated by NATO and higher pressure rounds (+P & +P+). There have been cases of a Glock KA-BOOMing, but that is usually from handloaded rounds or in the earlier generation models in .40SW that lacked proper rear case support. The most important things to consider with this article is 1)the ammunition was probably not made to standard since it was foreign 2)any mechanical device can and will eventually fail. Glocks have a great reputation for being reliable, BUT you can get a lemon as with anything else you buy. As for the Sheriff's Department, you shouldn't have much to worry about with your new Glocks. A little over 60% of US police forces issue them. That should say a lot about them. And to the injured duputy, I hope all goes well and you make a full recovery. You people have my full and utmost respect doing what you do everyday putting your lives on the line!

So, if the problem was the ammunition, why is there a picture of the Glock handgun in the story instead of the faulty ammunition?

Just lazy reporting?
