TRIADELPHIA -- A carbon monoxide leak at the Comfort Inn in Triadelphia sent three people to the hospital Dec. 6.

Firefighters said the carbon monoxide level was so high at the Comfort Inn near Dallas Pike, Sunday morning, that it could have killed someone.

According to Valley Grove Fire Chief Bob Young his department was initially called out around 9:30 a.m. Sunday for a person suffering seizures and shortness of breath.

Upon arrival two more people were discovered as also being sick.

"Two patients were taken to Wheeling Hospital and one was taken to Ohio Valley Medical Center. Doctors discovered they were sick from being exposed to the poison," said Young.

The condition of two of the patients was so severe they had to be transported to a Pittsburgh hospital.

"The problem happened because of the cold weather. Construction crews working at the hotel had put up a retaining sheet and torpedo heaters overnight so that they would be able to continue work in the cold weather," said Young.

Officials said the carbon monoxide built up and seeped into rooms the crews were working on.

Authorities said a small portion of the hotel, where crews are still working, has been shut down but the hotel is open.

WTRF attempted to contact hotel officials several times, but management said they had no comment.

Officials said the hotel contacted all guests that were at risk.

There was no word on the condition of the three patients who were treated.
