It's the time of year for celebrating and that for some means having a drink, but now thanks to some local groups you won't have to worry about a ride home.

WHEELING  -- As adults head out to celebrate over the holiday season, they can “do the ride thing” by taking advantage of a free program that can help keep Wheeling and Moundsville streets safe.

Carenbauer Distributing Corp. and Yellow Cab Co. are sponsoring Alert Cab, a community-based initiative that helps prevent drunk driving by providing safe cab rides home to adults who may have had too much to drink.

Area bartenders and servers at participating bars and restaurants can call Yellow Cab to request a free cab ride for adults who want to get home safely at the end of the evening.

By offering complimentary ride homes, Alert Cab keeps potential drunk drivers off the road.

Erin Ball, of Carenbauer Distributing, said her company wants all adults who choose to drink, regardless of the occasion, to act responsibly.

“That means if you include alcohol in your celebrations, please plan ahead and arrange to use alternate transportation, such as Alert Cab, or a designated driver to get home safely," said Ball.

"Drunk driving is 100 percent preventable, and we are pleased to sponsor this community service and do our part to help keep our roads safe," added Ball.

Alert Cab has been serving Wheeling and Moundsville since 1985 and has approximately 40 local participants.

Patrons can find red ‘Alert Cab’ signage at participating bars and restaurants. The program runs from Thanksgiving to New Years Day.
