Drivers not using headlights while their windshield wipers are on could be ticketed starting Friday.

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio -- Starting Jan. 1, Ohio drivers will have a new law to obey.

Officials say it actually took effect six months ago, but it is about to become "enforceable."

It means a $100 fine for anyone found in violation.

Basically, the law mandates that if you have your windshield wipers on, you must turn on your headlights too.

It's that simple.

No matter what prompted you to turn your wipers on -- snow, sleet, rain, mist or fog -- if it was precipitation, your headlights must be on.

"After the first six months, the violation becomes enforceable, in that a ticket can be written if the officer chooses to do so," said Lt. Roger Norris, post commander of the Ohio State Highway Patrol in Belmont and Monroe counties. "It's a secondary violation, as is a safety belt violation. There has to be a primary violation as to why you were pulled over and at that point the officer has the authority to issue a citation if he chooses to do so."

Norris said people whose cars have "running lights" will not get any slack.

He said it has to be headlights -- and hence taillights also -- that are on when the wipers are working.

And the $100 fine is just a minimum.

Norris said they can also add court costs, which would make it even more expensive.

How many people have turned their windowshield wipers on on a beautiful day just to clean their windows from dust ....plenty...If your required to turn the lights on, more energy usage means more batteries from over usage will need to be changed. This is nothing more then the Ohio spendthrift legislators who sleep at nite dreaming of ways to get income from their constituents so they can continue to squander it away. The State of Ohio is about broke.

What does having my wipers on have to do with my headlights? I fail to understand what difference it makes, in broad daylight, rain or shine, if my headlights are on because my wipers are. Is this to signal oncoming people I may have a problem with flying wiper blades, take caution? If EVER there were a more ridiculous law made for nothing more than revenue generation and an excuse for the cops to screw with you,.I'd like to hear it. If it's night, dusk, fog, it's pretty logical my lights will already be on. During Daylight hours, rain or shine, wipers on or off, it's MY damned business if the headlights are on, if they want to make a law regarding headlights, just make it Mandatory that all cars must have headlights on at all times when on the road, period. It has been proven to reduce busy intersection/croosroad accidents. But, my lights on because I wiped a bug off my windshield with my wipers? This is just plain Stupid and if we stand for it, so are we.

Kris!!! OMG! Rain, mist, fog, etc., common sense dictates a vehicle's lights should be on in those conditions. Wipers on, lights on...s-i-m-p-l-e. It's been a law in other states for years. However, you get a hall pass because with you being a FIFO I can see how comprehending a complex issue such as this can cause mass confusion. :-)

I can't believe this is actually a law but I guess it is anything for dollar. If my wipers come on now does that mean next year there will be a law that states I MUST DRIVE at least 5 miles under the limit when my wipers are on? (for safety's sake) Does this mean the little switch on my headlights that says AUTO is not longer a convenience to me and I must keep the lights on MANUAL so I can remember to turn them on. What if I just have the wipers on intermittent - do I flash my lights? I don't see this as a safety measure - common sense should dictate safety but our representatives have proven there is very little common sense in Ohio!

LAW IS CLEAR-- RUNNING LIGHTS OK!!

THE LAW is clear.. running lights are OK.. Most all new vehicles initiate 'lights' when the vehicle is turned on. According to the local OHIO HIGHWAY PATROL, lights are lights. Perhaps a news update would suffice to clarify this report.

This should be common sense!!! If it's raining your head lights (and tail lights) should be on so you can be seen by other vehicles on the road. If more people used common sense, like using your turn signal, laws like this would not have to be made. If they are going to make the law, don't make is a secondary violation. Ticket people that don't turn on their lights, use turn signals, turn right from the left turn lane, tail gate, etc. etc. etc. Maybe instead of griping about these silly laws, you should start paying more attention to your driving!!!

Chilehead.

you do use energy running your headlights, it puts additional load on the alternater which causes the engine to idle faster to put out more voltage. that equals more gas burnt.

so in theory, turn on the windshield washers means turning on the headlights. LOL.

when you are running the wipers in the timed option does that mean your lights have to be on when the wipers wipe.

Why did ohio repeal the motorcycle helment law , except for beginning riders? Ohio's own satistics say 95% of all motorcycle crashes involve head trauma,

So are they passing laws for safety, or are they passing laws to get easy money?

Though vehicle safety is paramount; one would tend to believe that troopers anywhere would have much more higher piorities than to check that a driver has his/her headlights on - in any sort of weather. This does not make much sense as troopers should have more pertinent duties than this meter-maid sort of check list. I wonder if we could get them to check our fluids and tire pressures too -just to make sure of legal fluid levels and legal tire pressures, etc. Maybe we could even have them change our wiper blades if needed. How about maybe even a vehicle detailing - come on Columbus law-makers - let's get a vehicle detailing law put into action. One would also believe that Columbus law-makers would have more to do than to waste money on getting a friggin headlight law worked over & passed-somehow. People, contact your reps & raise questions about this- see how your reps voted. I want one of those jobs in a state that is currently in shambles due to everything other than drivers not turning headlights on.. Come On !! Get Real !! & do somehting that matters - something makes a difference.. Not this Crap...

FIFO's, you guys continue to amaze me. It's elementary, "If-you-turn-on-your-wipers, reach-over-and-turn-on-your-headlights!!" No clarification needed, no complications, simply turn on your headlights when running your wipers. You do not pay electricity bills running your headlights for cryin' out loud. Jeez!

Oh, another point, Since vehicles are now required to operate the headlights when the wipers turn on, does that mean all new vehicles sold in Ohio have to be fitted so the headlights turn on when the wipers are activated. And will manufactures be required to retrofit all vehicles now registered in the state of ohio

and the code should be made to refresh without refreshing the whole page, which causes your comments to have to be rewritten. l

what about a law that says police vehicles are not allowed to disable daytime running lights. A vehicle safety device.

MAYBE LAW IS NOT CLEAR??

MAYBE THE LAW IS NOT CLEAR? Running lights which are automatic on ALL newer vehicles do not count as 'lights'? Always need lights in the rain, fog, etc, but there may be more accidents IF the driver is attempting to determine whether the lights are on automatic or some other lighting needs to be adjusted. PLEASE READ THE LAW AND CLARIFY OR POST A LINK TO THIS LEGISLATION.
