Barry Carpenter 's sentence is two years, eight months , concurrent.

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio -- Belmont County Judge John Solovan sentenced former Martins Ferry Police Chief Barry Carpenter to two years ,eight months in prison.

Following sentencing, Carpenter was taken into custody and placed in the Belmont County jail.

Authorities say after paperwork is filed, Carpenter will be sent to the Rehabilitation and Correction Center in Orient, Ohio.

His attorney Dennis McNamara says he will appeal the conviction of theft in office and receiving stolen property.

McNamara also filed a motion today to have count five which is tampering, dismissed. Judge John Solovan rejected the motion for acquittal of tampering with evidence .

Solovan told Carpenter "You have taken no responsibility or accountability for your actions."

Carpenter was convicted of burglary at the home of the surrogate mother for Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.

He was convicted on three of six charges.

The former chief recently resigned from his job, because a convicted felon can not serve as a police officer in Ohio.

He got what was coming to him. I remember when I over heard Carpenter last year say "I buffed up the reports so we can charge him with the FELONY because I dont like the kid anyways". Sounds like a good chief to me. NOT....What goes around comes around.

Nicer comment, Quite obviously you don't know these guys at all. Fact being this is not the first house he has broken into. How about all the physical abuse he did to people? Don't know he did that stuff did ya? I know . I always said the good lord was not going to let them keep getting away with what they do to people. Nobody could go to the law or the law did nothing when they did go. This isn't blowing off steam these are facts. I have my proof if ever questioned. Do you????

To: Finally Caught, right on! Hard to tell what other crimes these criminals in uniform have committed and have never been caught. They have the opportunity. What are these communities doing hiring young men as Chiefs in the first place. The Chief's job should go to seasoned officers with known track records. A Chief should be a respected elder officer within the law enforcement community.

Not only does he get off cheap with two years eight months, but he'll not be put in with the general prison population. Put him in with the pedophiles and the sex offenders. If anything bad cops deserve worse treatment not special treatment.

Whether they read it on the computer, or step outside their house, watch tv or even talk to anyone they're going to hear it. He brought this not only on to himself, but the disgrace to his whole family. For once Barry Carpenter should'nt of thought about himself, but should of thought about his kids! Why would you jeopardize the job that is supporting your kids? He knew all along that he was doing wrong and its no ones fault but his own. People are going to be talking about this for a very long time, but you cant stop people from talking..its called freedom of speech so if his family dont like what people are writing about him then stay off the computer! Its sad but true, but remember we didnt do this to his kids he did.

this has made me wonder what goes on in ferry and bridgeport that we dont know about, been hearing rumors for years about corruption it makes u wonder how tru most of it is. police go through a lot for very little pay, i have always looked up to them and respected them now i look at them differently although i dont want to but cant help it. Thanks to Carpenter and Dojack i think it has shaken all of our trust in the law enforcement dept in valley. IT WILL TAKE A LONG TIME FOR THE HURT THEY HAVE CAUSED TO GO AWAY!

Because he is a policeman wow what good morals he has shown for all the kids in the valley especially to the kids that probably looked up to him. My son was questioning about this issue I had to explain to him all cops wasn't bad but than he said he doesn't want to trust police no more now what he is only 10. So now who do we trust for our protection!!!!!!! Lock our doors from police patroling the neighborhood to see what house they want to rob!!!!You never know!

Yeah - I do tend to NOT DO THINGS THAT ARE ILLEGAL AND WOULD PUT ME IN JAIL SEPARATED FROM MY CHILDREN. But, I guess some of us believe that we are ABOVE THE LAW.

2 years 8 months? Seriously? He should have been made an example. He got off easy! Don't for a second believe that he is not guilty! Now maybe he'll get some of what he dished... I'm sure he'll ask for "special protection" in the prison, though, because of who he is! This is ridiculous. Who knows what else he has gotten away with prior that made him feel that he was invincible and could pull this off. Enjoy the vacation, Barry! I feel sorry for your kids!

TO Nicer Comment: ARE YOU SERIOUS?????? He (Carpenter) is bad, and a criminal and a thief..............hell hes now a convicted Felon! And nobody but HIM put him there! Evidently you dont know Carpenter very well. He became greedy and was mean to people, lied and hurt alot of people beside Miss Ross (look what hes done to his own family)and never even deserved the Chiefs title in the first place. He thought he was above the law and nobody would question him. WRONG! So YOU can shut up and live your pathetic life not realizing what is true and real!!

JUDGE SOLOVAN IS A SERIOUS JUDGE! He is dedicated to the residents of Belmont County and will always TAKE HIS PROFESSION SERIOUS!! We are very lucky to have this dedicated professional in this position. The jury spoke, the prosecutors and their representatives had their input and Judge Solovan handed down the penalty. AGAIN, WE ARE VERY LUCKY TO HAVE THIS COMPETENT PROFESSIONAL JUDGE IN BELMONT COUNTY!!!

Also, Dallas G., what exactly does making a comment calling a group of people "good ole boys in Belmont County" make you? Saying that because someone works for/in Belmont County makes them a "good ole boy" is racist in itself. Typical though. It's the people who make comments like this who are responsible for the racial divide in this country. They are the first to look at things from a racially. Why couldn't you just say what you had to say without tacking on that last sentence. It deactivates everything else you said. Who really cares what you think now that you've devalued your opinion?

Seriously Dallas G. What the hell does race have to do with this? "Another fine example of "the good ole boys" in Belmont County"? It's obvious what you are inferring. How about "another fine example of someone trying to make something totally unrelated to race, about race". That was just a dumb, unrelated comment. C'mon man!

Mr. Carpenter was un-professional prior to this event and the citizens of Martins Ferry are lucky they did not have to pay his salary like the citizens of Bridgeport. The other victims are the family of Mr. Carpenter. SAD!!

Talk about a miscarriage of justice!!!! How could he not get guilty of the burglary charges, he went inside, there was no break in by nobody but him. did he call for back up....NO! Because he was the criminal. Another fine example of " the good ole boys" in Belmont County.
