ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio -- Belmont County Judge John Solovan sentenced former Martins Ferry Police Chief Barry Carpenter to two years ,eight months in prison.
Following sentencing, Carpenter was taken into custody and placed in the Belmont County jail.
Authorities say after paperwork is filed, Carpenter will be sent to the Rehabilitation and Correction Center in Orient, Ohio.
His attorney Dennis McNamara says he will appeal the conviction of theft in office and receiving stolen property.
McNamara also filed a motion today to have count five which is tampering, dismissed. Judge John Solovan rejected the motion for acquittal of tampering with evidence .
Solovan told Carpenter "You have taken no responsibility or accountability for your actions."
Carpenter was convicted of burglary at the home of the surrogate mother for Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.
He was convicted on three of six charges.
The former chief recently resigned from his job, because a convicted felon can not serve as a police officer in Ohio.
