WHEELING -- Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland will be the special guest at the Ohio Valley Baseball Coaches Clinic at Wheeling Park High School on Sunday, Jan.31.
Leyland, along with good friend and longtime big league coach Rich Donnelly are the clinicians, as well as Wheeling Jesuit head coach Terry Edwards.
The camp was organized by Wheeling resident Doug Costain.
"It's a chance for area coaches, especially recreation league coaches, to learn from the pros," said Costain.
Other area coaches assisting in the clinic are former Wheeling Park coach Mark Dellbrugge, former Wheeling American Legion coach Doug Tush and former Ohio Valley College assistant coach John Rush.
The clinic runs from 1-5 p.m. and costs $40 per person. The price goes to $50 the day of the clinic.
For college and high school staffs (up to 4) the costs is $120. Rec. league coaches (up to 5) is $100. An extra fee is charged if you come on the day of the clinic.
The clinic is sponsored by Bordas & Bordas, PLLC, Gold Khourey & Turak, and the Ohio County Commissioners.
Leyland will bring a wealth of knowledge to the clinic. He coached the Florida Marlins to the World Series title in 1997 and was the 2006 American League Manager of the Year, when his Tigers defeated the New York Yankees to win the pennant.
Donnelly, who was born and raised in Steubenville, Ohio has more than 25 years of Major League Baseball coaching experience and was a member of Leyland's Marlins staff in '97. Donnelly was an assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 90's and returned in 2009.
Edwards is in his fourth season as the Head Coach at Wheeling Jesuit University and is well-respected with over 30 years of experience in the high school and college ranks.
