STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- Steel workers are expected to converge on the city of Steubenville Friday to discuss what many are calling an uncertain future for their industry.
WTRF has been told that Severstal will not be at Friday’s meeting that is being held by Ohio State Rep. John Domenick, D-Jefferson, on the campus of Eastern Gateway Community College.
Domenick, along with other state leaders, have called on Severstal to either restart its Ohio Valley plants or sell them to someone who will. This meeting comes just days after Severstal releases its plans for 2010 and they don't show the company re-starting its electric arc furnace or blast furnace in Mingo Junction. However, the company has resumed some operations in Martins Ferry and they say they plan to have the Follansbee Coke Plant in full swing this year.
Friday’s meeting is expected to be a chance for laid off steelworkers to vent. Union leaders tell me they will show up despite the fact that Severstal leaders have pulled out of that meeting. WTRF cameras will be there and we will bring you complete coverage of the meeting
