WHEELING -- It's a familiar sight...orange barrels and flashing detour signs.
Starting today ,the Westbound lanes of the Wheeling Tunnel are closed until October so crews can repair tiles, do electrical work, and paint.
That's nine months of detours.
Ronnie Brunner goes through the tunnel to Wheeling Island Hotel Casino Racetrack every Sunday to watch the races.
"The detour is definitely a bad thing," said Brunner. "It's gonna get crowded trying to get to my races. Going to and from. I bet it will be tough."
According to Dustin Neely with the West Virginia Department of Highways, they're taking the concerns of businesses and residents seriously and hope to have the work done as soon as possible.
Detour signs are posted.
Drivers can take Interstate 470 to bypass the detour completely.
Drivers can also exit at 16th Street to Market Street then back to Interstate 70.
