CHARLESTON -- West Virginia has seen a recent increase in car accidents due to texting and cell phone usage, according to a new report.
Drivers who used phones or other electronic devices caused more than 400 car accidents last year.
"When you focus on the phone your not worried about what's ahead of you, or the vehicle, so we want to remind people not to use an iPod or phone," said Sgt. Shawn Williams, with the Charleston Police Department traffic division.
Currently, it's not illegal for motorists to text or use a cell phone while driving.
But a bill introduced in the state Senate last week would make it a misdemeanor and primary offense to text while driving.
"We have a large problem, it's a safety issue. People are getting into cars that amount to getting behind the seat of a weapon," said Delegate Nancy Guthrie, D-Kanawha.
The bill is currently in the Senate, and has to make its way through the House before being adopted.
