POWHATAN, Ohio -- At just 2 years-old, Aubrey Brooks, of Powhatan, Ohio, has had more challenges than most of us will ever face in a lifetime.
Diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder that keeps her from enjoying life in the light, as she approached her second birthday, she faced the biggest challenge yet which was a risk worth taking.
Just days before he scheduled trip to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, Aubrey was a little bundle of energy.
Fast forward to a month later, Aubrey is in the pediatrics intensive care unit after undergoing chemotherapy. She has lost her hair and underwent a stem cell transplant.
Aubrey is fighting a virus in the midst of it all, needing breathing treatments and at times and a ventilator. Mother Nichole, dad Doug and her extended family are now in a waiting game, worrying every day, hoping for the best, and trying to hold it together.
Nichole said that she wants to be strong for Aubrey and not get upset in front of her.
Children's Hospital turned things inside out for Aubrey, preparing a special room with special lighting and window tints. The operating room was also fitted with lighting that wouldn't burn Aubrey's skin. However, they can't wave a magic wand, as Nichole and Doug wait for good news. Aubrey's blood cell counts need to go up and soon, to show that the transplant worked. If not, another transplant with another donor is waiting in the wings.
Her family said that Aubrey is still happy and wants to do the same things she does at home.
Aubrey’s mother said the community has sent a ton of mail, e-mails and gifts, something that thrills little Aubrey. This is something Nichole feels will help explain to Aubrey someday what she went through.
Now, the family waits and WTRF will keep you posted on her progress. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Brooks family.
