WHEELING -- They may be smaller than a tick, but bed bugs can cause a big problem in your home or business if you are not careful.

In Ohio County, around 13 facilities are being investigated by the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department for a bed bug problem. One such facility is Windsor Manor apartments located on Main Street in Wheeling, which is currently being controlled at this time. Windsor Manor has also had bed bug problems in the past. Bed bugs are not just unique to Ohio County, but it is a problem making a resurgence across the nation. If you should find the bed bugs biting, it is important to notify your local health department.

"Most notably when we get a report, someone calls in saying they or someone has bed bugs. The health department does an investigation and then makes sure the facility or individual has management plan for bed bugs. A pesticide company will come in treating the exposed area and working with individual to control it. Biggest part of bed bug problem," Administrator for Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department Howard Gamble said.

Gamble also wants to point out that it usually is not the individual's fault if there is a bed bug problem. They are common in facilities across the United States. Gamble said they are hard to get rid of so it is up to the owner to clean, vacuum and change their sheets often. It is also a business owner's responsibility to have an active treatment plan in place.

A conference is going to be held on Wednesday, Aug. 4 addressing bed bug concerns. The conference is taking place in Wheeling, but a time and place has yet to be set.
