Heather Miller, 21, continues to change lives even though she is gone.
WHEELING -- It's been more than two years since a young Wheeling woman was killed in a drunken driving accident on National Road.
Heather Miller was just 21 years old when she died after a car accident early one morning in March 2008.
Just before her death, her parents, Gary and Jody had their first introduction to Core, a nationwide organ donation organization. Heather was an organ donor, a surprise to her family. Heather went on to save three lives with that organ donation decision. Her heart and both of her kidneys went to people waiting. The Millers wrote letters to the recipients of Heather's organs hoping to someday make a connection. Now, Jody is about to meet the woman who received Heather's left kidney. The 33-year-old woman contacted Jody via Facebook.
Heather's kidney was a perfect match for Jen, a one and a billion chance for a stranger to stranger match. The two women, bound by this miracle, will now meet face to face. Jen agreed to fly in from San Diego to meet the Millers and spend the week.
This Friday is the Heather Miller Memorial Golf Scramble at Oglebay Park's Crispin Golf Course and Jen will attend the event.
Jody said the scramble has been booked for more than six weeks, and so many people have stepped up to help.
The scramble raises money for a scholarship fund in Heather's memory. The money goes to West Virginia University nursing students. Jody said they've given away thousands of dollars to prospective students. B.E. Taylor will attend Friday, Heather’s favorite song “Here Comes the Sun”. The public is welcome to attend the 10:30 a.m. event.
