The residents of Lansing Apartments form a crime watch.
LANSING, OHIO -- A Belmont County neighborhood got tired of crime and decided to take action.
Last September, residents of the Lansing Apartments were dealing with peeping toms, thieves and vandals.
So they went to the sheriff's department and the prosecutor, and they formed a community crime watch.
“We contacted the Sheriff's Department, Ryan Allar, to see if he had any ideas and he came to speak to us and given the facility, he felt the best thing to do would be to start a neighborhood crime watch,” said Debbie Turner, Service Coordinator for the apartments.
“And from there we contacted Chris Berhalter's office and he came to our next meeting, helped us set it up by developing guidelines,” added Rose Ewing, Site Manager.
Prosecutor Chris Berhalter commends the residents.
He said they are not vigilantes.
They don't carry weapons or take any action on their own.
They keep watch, take note of license plates and descriptions of people and vehicles, and call the authorities.
