WHEELING -- As tough economic times continue to grip the Ohio Valley, a local coal company announced it is hiring in the coming months.

Tunnel Ridge, a coal company which encompasses about 1,200 acres of land, is set to begin longwall mining in 2010.

Chief Operating Officer of Tunnel Ridge Tom Waynne said Friday that they've already begun hiring some workers and even more are needed.

The company hopes to pull about 6 million tons of coal from the ground through long wall mining.

Company officials said more than a thousand jobs will ultimately be created. Wheeling Mayor Andy McKenzie said Tunnel Ridge has been investing in Ohio County for years.

The company is currently taking applications. You can call them at 304-547-2901 or you can obtain an application through the Ohio County unemployment office.

The only reason coal mine jobs haven't been sent across the pond is because they can't . If the coal companies could they would .

Swell, Dudley wants to remind us that the President and "the people" want the coal mines to be more responsible. The President loves us, yup he does, except that he is the first President to not campaign in all 50 states, but libs will tell you he such a uniter and the French loves us now and I feel warm about that. Coal and gas are the sources of energy that the US has more of than anyone else and the effort should be to make emissions cleaner and there is movement toward that. That would have been a worthwhile goal of the stimulus money, rather than the AIG bonuses that Obama approved. Green people? Goofy and narrow minded. Well I must be a raving coal person, but nope I can just see that the energy question has had its agenda set for it by the "new coal baron...well energy barons". Wind and solar its so neat but it cannot be used in most of the US for anything other than cute little supplements to the coal fired system. Now why is it that greenies dance to the wind and turbine tune as the savoir of mankind and never once mention hydro. Hyrdo is a massive producer of energy, its clean, its 24/7 and it can be made on the major rivers of America (including those in the east) most of which are already damned and locked for navigation/flood control purposes. We could have 100 huge producing hydros on the Ohio River alone but its never mentioned. Why? Now about Tunnel Coal company. Nice press release and obedient stories done by WTRF and the black hats from the north, and the guy stood there and said about 1500 jobs...well it was in the press release so it was news. Will anyone ever look back and do a story about how many actual jobs they brought?? Doubt it. Does anyone ever talk about the casinos and their job promises to get the issue passed on the ballot? Or do we just swallow their claim that its the economy and thats why they have had to lay off the people they said they would add? We never get anything but press release and packaged stories on the local news. Its so easy to do that, its already done and handed to the station, lets just do that.

this goes against what coal companies are telling the miners. maybe the miners will see they have been lied to. NWP21 has nothing to do with underground mining, Obama's not out to send mining jobs overseas. Americans just want coal mining to be more enviromentaly responsible.
