ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio -- Surrogate Michelle Ross was on the witness stand and refused to be video taped or have her voice recorded.

Ross said just before she gave birth to actress Sarah Jessica Parker's twins she was living in a Wheeling motel with three cats, a dog, and a python snake, but not her five year old son. She said he was staying with relatives.

A media frenzy surrounded the Belmont County Courthouse Thursday as Ross began her testimony.

Martins Ferry Police Chief Barry Carpenter is on trial for allegedly breaking into surrogate Michelle Ross' home earlier this year to obtain personal information in an attempt to sell it to tabloid photographers.

In day three of the trial, the State of Ohio played a video tape for the jury which shows Carpenter being questioned by special agents from BCI about entering the home. Carpenter doesn't deny entering the home in Colerain. He maintains he was driving by and saw a door opened and went inside to make sure everything was alright.

Prosecutors allege that while inside Ross' home, Carpenter took personal documents belonging to Ross and they say he snapped pictures of a belly cast that belonged to Ross.

Paparazzi photographers this week told the jury that Carpenter worked with Bridgeport Police Chief Chad Dojack to sell them the items. They claimed the items were of no value to the company they worked for, since their company would not pay for illegally obtained items.

If Carpenter is found guilty by the jury he could be sentenced to prison.

Dojack will face similar charges in connection to the breaking when his trial begins in January.

Reporter Dave Elias is in the courtroom documenting all of the testimony and will continue to update readers here on wtrf.com and on 7 News throughout the day.

The victim was Michelle Ross and the TAX PAYER. Some of us work, and cannot go to the courthouse and sit for 5 days for the 'media event'. Does anyone know of all the 'national media' that attended this court action? And= agree besides the court transcript, no one will know the actual trial testimony and we do have a right to know what is occurring in our court system. Sad this action embarrassed the entire region.

Really,

Tax payers aren't paying for a media event, they are paying for a criminal trial. An innocent person was wronged by the police and justice is being served. Do you really care that much about the trial? Do you feel shafted because you can't plop down on your couch and watch it over a bag of potato chips? Like the previous poster said, if you wanted to witness it so badly, you should have went on down to the courthouse and sat in.

Dear Really,

You might be a taxpayer but this woman is a victim of crime. Her testimony should not be videotaped by the media if she doesn't want it. Her testimony will be filed with the clerk of courts as public record and that is all you are entitled to.

Dave Elias, the woman's house was on Colerain Pike inside city limits, not in Colerain.

The tax payers are paying for a trial for someone who has allegedly broken the law. If you are that interested go to the courthouse and sit in on the trial. I didn't see anything saying that it was a closed courtroom. People just want to sit at home and watch a circus these days.

REALLY- NO TAPING, NO PHOTOS, NO VIDEOTAPING?? WE THE TAXPAYER ARE PAYING FOR THIS 'MEDIA EVENT' AND WE CANNOT HAVE ANY ACCESS TO THE COURT PROCEEDING? A WITNESS CANNOT DICTATE THIS PROCEEDING- AND IF SO = WHY??
