WHEELING -- Nearly 500 families won't have to go grocery shopping for their Thanksgiving meal, but they will have a warm dinner for the holiday.
The Salvation Army in Wheeling is making sure families have the holiday some can't afford.
Major John Blevins of the Wheeling Salvation Army said he expects a full house Sunday evening when his organization serves Thanksgiving dinner.
Major Blevins said the organization has seen an increase in requests for help in Wheeling this year. They said that’s been driven by the poor economy and high unemployment rates.
"Last year we had around 500 people come through our doors. This year we expect even more," said Major Blevins.
The Salvation Army said every family that lines up this Sunday will get a Thanksgiving bundle with a complete holiday meal, including a turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie.
The event will be held Sunday Nov. 22, 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the Salvation Army Wheeling: Corps Community Center located at 3333 Eoff St. in Wheeling.
Major Blevins said services, meals, and toy drives during the holiday season alone use nearly half of the money bell-ringers raise.
