MARTINS FERRY, Ohio -- Martins Ferry Mayor Phil Wallace says he is in the process of searching for a new chief to replace Barry Carpenter who was found guilty on Monday in connection with burglary at the home of a surrogate mother. While Carpenter was found not guilty on the burglary, a jury did find him guilty on several other felony charges.
"We can hire from within the police force or bring someone in from outside." said Wallace. Under state law in Ohio a police officer can not serve after he has been convicted of a crime.
Carpenter was discharged from his duties in August and Lt. Phil Hartman was appointed to serve as acting chief. It's not clear if Hartman is interested in the job permanently since he refused to talk with WTRF on Tuesday.
The Martin Ferry Police force has a contingent of 12 officers. Mayor Wallace hopes to have a new chief hired by the first of the year.
