Ohio County Schools has its arsenal ready for this winter's battle with Mother Nature.
Ohio County Schools Superintendent George Krelis said parents have multiple sources to find whether their child's school will be closed due to winter weather.
The school system has a phone networking system that calls the residence of each student informing them of delays and cancellations.
School officials said the information is also posted on the Ohio County Schools Web site at wphs.ohio.k12.wv.us/ocbe/.
They can also call 304-243-0325 in regard to delays and cancellations.
Ohio County Schools Maintenance Director Jeff Turner said his department has full supplies of road salt and ice melter, and its snow plows and ice spreaders are ready for use.
The decision to cancel or delay classes is made by Ohio County Schools Superintendent Krelis and Deputy Superintendent Dianna Vargo with input from Transportation Director Gary Kestner and Turner.
''We will not put a child at risk,'' Kestner said. ''The decision begins the night before a possible delay or cancellation, and we personally inspect conditions beginning at 3:30 a.m. We have until 5 a.m. to make the decision on whether we close or delay, and it's based on information we've gathered. But what is important is taking the information you have and making a decision based on the safety of children''.
