Charleston City Council Votes on Sick Day Issue With Firefighters/EMT's

Posted: Updated:

The hits keep coming for the Charleston Fire Department.  Last month council voted to take administrative action on overtime pay to correct an on-going problem.  Monday night, city council voted to change the sick day policy.

The battle between Charleston firefighters and the city is heating up and it may have an impact on other communities around the mountain state.

Union Leaders say firefighters have already lost overtime pay and stand to lose a significant amount of sick days and want to reduce the number of firefighters in truck from three to two.

But city Leaders approved final reading concerning sick days at Monday night's city council meeting.

The issue: leaders want to replace firefighters odd 20 plus sick days with only four personal days.

Firefighters also say they are worried about a possible reduction in staff, putting only two firefighters on a truck as opposed to three.

They say not only do they feel taken advantage of, but it's a safety issue.
