Rash of Vehicle Break-ins In Brooke County

Posted: Updated:

Various car break-ins have been taking place throughout rural Brooke County over the past several days.  Incidents have been taking place on Apple Pie Ridge and St. John's Road, according to authorities.

Brooke County Chief Deputy Chuck Jackson said the best way to prevent this is by locking your car doors.

In the 30 years since being a police officer, Jackson said he can count on one hand the number of times he's seen someone actually smash the window of a car, and steal what's inside.

Jackson said the people committing the crimes only break-in the vehicles that are unlocked, and are mainly happening outside of people's homes.  They are stealing what is most accessible.

"Nothing's easier than taking cd's, a GPS unit, wallet or purse out of an unlocked car," Jackson said.

People aren't calling the sheriff's department to report the crimes since stolen items are not that significant, Jackson said.

An extra patrol has been added in the evening to the targeted areas.

Charges could either be a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on what type of item is stolen.

The break-ins do not appear to be related.

You are being asked to call the Brooke County Sheriff's Department if you notice anything suspicious.
