Superbowl Weekend Gives Local Businesses a Boost

Posted: Updated:

Local businesses are preparing for big business this weekend, as the New York Giants and New England Patriots play in Indianapolis for Superbowl XLVI Sunday.

Business is busy at Convenient Food Mart in Wheeling.  Deli Clerk Terrie Leigh is used to this every year.

"We will start early frying all day tomorrow," she said.  "It will take a lot of the day up."

Leigh said they have one thousand wings to fry.  The special is what makes it so popular.  Customers are able to buy 30 wings for $19.99, or 16 pieces of chicken for the same price.  The wings range in flavors from hot, sweet chili, barbeque and plain.

Business is also booming at Neely's Grocery, also in Wheeling.

"Even though the Steelers are not in it, we're pretty lucky," co-owner Todd miller said.  "We're very fortunate.  With hot wings, chicken, beer and cigarettes, we're very steady."

Miller said orders are doubling.  Hundreds of hot wings need made, with preparations going well into Sunday.

Clinical Nutrition Manager at Ohio Valley Medical Center says it takes discipline to eat healthy during the big game.  Mixing fruits and vegetables with the greasy foods is key.

"Even adding these to what you're already eating, wings, chips, etc., is better," she said.  "You're filling up on a little bit so you don't eat the other stuff."

One weekend won't hurt you however.
