
Wheeling native J.C. Maxwell is the West Virginia State Free Throw champion in the 8-9 year-old division.
The Warwood Elementary School third-grader canned 22 of 25 free throw attempts in the final round of the state competition , which was held at Capital High School in Charleston on Saturday.
Maxwell is the grandson of current Wheeling Central boys basketball coach Mel Stephens, and son of Nicole and Jimmy Maxwell of Warwood.
J.C. has been the Maroon Knight's water boy since he could walk.
He moves on to the national competition in March in Maryland.
Maxwell won the first leg of his journey at Wheeling Jesuit University, and earned his trip to Charleston by winning the next round at the Millsop Center in Weirton.
