Oak Glen alum Ian Whittington has been hired as the new head football coach at his alma mater.
Whittington, 27, has been an assistant coach for the past three seasons under Tony Filberto, who left Oak Glen to take over as head coach at Weir High.
Whittington is a 2003 Oak Glen graduate, where he was a standout on the track, and on the football field and wrestlng mat. Whittington won the 140-pound state championship in 2003. After graduation, Whittington was an All-Conference defensive back at West Liberty. He led the Hilltoppers in tackles during the 2005 and 2006 seasons. As a junior, Whittington set a new school and conference record with a 100-yard interception return for touchdown.
He's ecstatic about the opportunity to be the new head coach of the Golden Bears.
"I can't wait to get started,"said Whittington. "I learned so much from coach Filberto(Tony)and I'm going to take all of that, and blend it with what I've learned in my coaching and playing days."
Plus, Whittington will have a brand new multi-sports complex, which is being built just outside of the high school.
"We finally get to have our own home field. One we can take pride in, and one we call our own for once," added Whittington.
The Oak Glen multi-sport complex will also be the home to Golden Bears soccer and track.
It's in the construction stages right now, but will be ready for the summer, according to athletic director Phil Rujack. The first home game is Friday, August 31 versus Wellsville.
