The Wheeling Central girls basketball team avenged two, regular-season losses to Shadyside, dropping the Lady Tigers in the Wheeling Hospital OVAC Girls Basketball Class 2A championship game 37-34 at Ohio University Eastern.
Junior guard Emily Bucon led the Maroon Knights with 13 points, classmate Colleen McCormick added a dozen, in Wheeling Central's first OVAC title under the new format. The Maroon Knights did a great job defensively on Shadyside's big guns, containing guards Karli Bonar (11 points) and Hayley Holenka (3 points) to a combined 14 points.
The Maroon Knights won the game, despite scoring just two points in the third quarter. A momentum-swinging three-pointer by senior Bri Robbins, her only points of the game, just beat the halftime buzzer and gave Wheeling Central a 19-11 lead at the break.
The Class 3A championship game went to Fort Frye, 50-34, over Monroe Central. Dan Liedtke's Lady Cadets got 20 points from junior standout Diedre Combs. Last year's runner-ups, the Cadets, have now won two of the last three OVAC championships(2010, 2012).
The 4A title went to Edison, 48-35 winners over Union Local, beating the Jets for a third time this season. The Prokapakis sisters were once again on their game, Kayla leading the way with 18 points, Kristin added 15. Dallas Montag led the Lady Jets with 8 points. The victory gives coach Tony Kovalesky's squad a second OVAC girls basketball title in the past three years.
In the Class A game, undefeated Trinity Christian defeated Weirton Madonna 47-37 for their first OVAC championship.
Haley Triplett led the Lady Warriors with 11 points, Tera Neely added 9, as Trinity improved to 19-0 on the season.
Madonna guard senior Isabella Anile scored 14 points, and went over 1,000 points for her career. Lisa Parkins added 10 points.
