College Goal Sunday a Success

It was the fourth year for College Goal Sunday, a statewide event offering students and their families free help in completing their Free Application for Federal Student Aid, also known as FAFSA.

The Wheeling campus of West Virginia Northern Community College was one of 19 locations across the state holding this event.

The turnout for Sunday's event was one of the biggest in years.

Wheeling Park High School senior Kodiac Garcia said this is the first time he has looked at the FAFSA forms.

"It's going to help me get to college to achieve my goals, and get my degree," he said.

"West Virginia is really great about pushing that importance to get FAFSA's filed,"  WVNCC's Associate Director of Financial Aid, Alicia Frey said.  "Not only federal aid, but for state aid.  Money is important to help students with education."

Financial representatives from both Wheeling Jesuit University and West Liberty University also assisted in the event.

Close to 80 families came to the event Sunday, showing just how in need people of the Ohio Valley really are in a tough economy.

FAFSA makes its decision based on a family's prior year of income.  Frey said applications for special consideration have tripled.  She said the Department of Education will actually allow financial aid administrators take into account 2012 income for families suffering from a job loss, reduction of hours or are laid off.

The FAFSA application is also available online at www.fafsa.gov.

The deadline to file FAFSA is March 1.
