Police Turn Up More Than Drugs In Drug Bust

In the midst of a drug bust, Bellaire Police were shocked at something they found in the suspects' car.

It started when an undercover officer did a controlled buy of crack cocaine from four people in a car--two men and two women.

After the crack bust, police say they searched the car and found more drugs and paraphernalia in the vehicle.

Police say they arrested Lewis Smith, Jason Haller, Ashley Cooper and Melissa Hartley on a variety of drug charges.

But as they searched the vehicle, they found a two-year-old baby covered with blankets in the back seat.

"We immediately called the Neffs Fire Department and had the child medically checked," said Chief Mike Kovalyk of the Bellaire Police Department. "We notified Childrens Services. We handed the child over to the father. And we arrested the four subjects and they were taken to the Belmont County Jail."

Kovalyk said the baby was the child of Melissa Hartley.

The chief emphasized that the four suspects are not residents of Bellaire.

He says he has a message to out-of-town drug dealers who come to Bellaire.

"Stay out of here and peddle your wares in your own community," said Kovalyk. "We may have a small department with strained resources, but we have seasoned veterans and we don't tolerate drug trafficking in our town."
