Bethany Women Break Swimming Relay Record

Posted: Updated:

The second day of the 2012 PAC Swimming & Diving Championships/James Longnecker Invitational for the Bethany College women's swimming and diving team was highlighted by a relay record being shattered in the final event of the session.

The 800 Freestyle Relay team of freshman Marina Baker (Winchester, Va./Sherando), junior Melissa Davis (Lancaster, Ohio), freshman Becky Martin (Somerset, Pa./Martin Christian Home School) and senior Sara Reass (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) took fifth place in the race by finishing in a time of 8:30.34. That time smashed the previous Bethany standard of 8:41.49, which had stood since 2008.

Two of the relay members also reached consolation events in individual events. Baker qualified 14th overall in the 400 Individual Medley preliminaries and would also place sixth in the consolation final by touching in a time of 5:08.61. Then in the 200 Free, Reass would take 16th overall by finishing with a best time of 2:06.16.

The Bison women have totaled 75 points so far to rank sixth among PAC programs and ninth out of 11 teams at the Invitational. Bethany's short-handed men's team did not score on Friday. Both teams will complete their seasons Saturday on the final day of the conference championships.
